The cybersecurity answers you want, straight from the experts.

For more than a decade, Verizon has gathered and analyzed threat data from around the world so that information security practitioners can understand the dangers they face.

The findings in the 2018 Data Breach Investigations Report (DBIR) are based on over 53K security incidents and 2,200+ confirmed breaches, provided by more than 60 contributors. Full of nefarious events, the 2018 DBIR offers a first-hand view into current cybercrime trends by studying the impact of malware, DoS attacks, social engineering and other activities across multiple industries.

Some key findings:

  • +28% of attacks involved insiders.
  • 16 minutes elapse before the first click on a phishing campaign. Another 12 minutes go by before the first report to Security.
  • 39% of malware cases involve ransomware, the top variety of malicious software in 2017.

Finally, 94% of incidents analyzed fell into one of nine classic attack patterns. These patterns give you a quick and easy way to assess the biggest risks to your business. That means if you’re commissioning a new app or updating systems, you can build more effective security in from the start.

There is no such thing as a cyber world devoid of risk. But information is power and understanding the threats you face today can only help you improve your security for the incidents you will face tomorrow.
