What is Enhanced 9-1-1 (E911)?

Enhanced 9-1-1 (E911) is an updated version of the 9-1-1 system designated for emergency calls (police, fire, ambulatory services) in the United States. E911 automatically identifies the caller's location and routes them to the nearest Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP), and provides first responders with the exact location information to assist in a speedy response. Landline, cell service, and VoIP providers are required by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to support E911 where it is available.

These regulations for VoIP users are mandated under RAY BAUM'S Act. This act requires users to provide emergency responders with all vital information necessary to determine the "dispatchable location" and quickly reach a 9-1-1 caller regardless of the device they dial from or their exact location inside a large building.

The critical component of this law is that it applies to any device that can conduct a phone call or dial a number, regardless of the technological platform it utilizes. No matter the device (wired, wireless, remote, or on-premise), it will now fall under the FCC's jurisdiction if it connects to an MLTS (multi-line telephone system). Version 42's E911 Features

Specific Dispatchable Location: Specific Dispatchable Location is emergency address data that can be assigned by domain, site, and the individual device level and can be as granular as "Floor 2, Office 204, the last cubicle at the end of the hall."

Address Detection and Verification: Devices in use are registered to the IP address (with an associated physical address) that is automatically detected by the system. When an IP address change is detected – either due to a physical address relocation or a circuit change - the user will be prompted to update their physical address so that the e911 data is kept up to date.

e911 Dialed Call Notification: Notifications that a 911 call has been made can now be sent to parties within the client's organization via an automated phone call, an email, or a SIP message that appears on the screens of supported phones.
